Give Help

Volunteer

Volunteers are the life blood of foodbanks. Your skills could be just what we need.

Volunteers are the driving force behind foodbanks. There are thousands of volunteers across the UK, helping The Trussell Trust Foodbank Network get emergency food to people in crisis. We want you to enjoy volunteering and there are lots of ways to get involved. Whatever role you choose, full training will be provided and you will make a real difference to the life of someone in crisis.

Foodbank Centre volunteers

As a Foodbank Centre volunteer you will play a vital role giving direct support to people who use foodbanks. You might meet and greet people coming into the foodbank, or sit with them and discuss their food requirements over a warm drink. You’ll offer a listening ear and, when appropriate, signpost people for further support and help.

If you’re compassionate, enjoy talking to new people and can spare a couple of hours on a Tuesday afternoon then we’d love to hear from you!

Stock Team volunteers

Our Stock Team volunteers mainly work on Monday mornings. As part of this friendly team you’ll be sorting through the donations received the previous week, checking their expiry dates and crating them up ready to be moved to either our stock room or our long-term storage. You’ll work singly or as part of a pair to move crates of stock (weighing a maximum of 15kg, about the same as a microwave) where necessary.

Alternatively, we’re also looking for people who are available on occasional Tuesday or Thursday mornings to help move crates of stock (again, weighing a maximum of 15kg) from our long-term storage site to the foodbank centre. You’ll need to be able to lift crates singly or as part of a pair, moving them into and out of the foodbank’s van.

Signposting volunteers

We’re looking for volunteers to train in this new role. You’ll be at the foodbank centre on Tuesday or Friday afternoons, helping to signpost our clients to other agencies and organisations that may be able to help them tackle any underlying reasons for their financial crisis. You’ll provide a friendly face and a listening ear, using our easy-to-use computer system to suggest local and national agencies that may be able to provide further support and advice.
